Transforming your Teeth
Esthetic bonding is a form of cosmetic dentistry popular among Dallas patients who want to transform their smile due to chipped or broken teeth that may look unsightly. This procedure is an alternative to veneers and a reliable technique used to correct chipped, misshapen, or worn down teeth, as well as to disguise crooked teeth or gaps between teeth without the use of orthodontics.
The bonding material is a tooth-colored composite that blends seamlessly with your natural enamel. If you’re dissatisfied with the shape or size of your teeth, cosmetic bonding can help. Here at Metroplex Implants and Family Dentistry, our dentists have many years of experience with esthetic bonding.
How it Works
The tooth is prepared for the procedure by etching the surface and applying a bonding liquid. Once the liquid sets, a composite resin is applied and sculpted into the desired shape by Dr. Radhika Wadhwa. Once set, the resin is trimmed, smoothed and polished to a natural appearance. You don’t need to do much to prepare for dental bonding, and anesthesia is generally not required unless a decayed tooth needs to be filled.
In order to ensure a perfect color match, your dentist will use a shade guide to select a composite resin color that will closely match the color of your tooth, according to WebMD. Let’s break the process down further.
As part of the bonding process, the surface of the tooth is roughened and a conditioning liquid is applied. The roughness of the tooth helps adhere the bonding. The dentist will then apply a tooth-colored, putty-like resin, then mold and smooth it so it looks perfectly natural. To harden the material quickly, the dentists will use an ultraviolet light or laser. Once hardened, the bonding may need to be trimmed and shaped a bit, then polished to match the other teeth. The whole process takes about a half hour to one hour total.
Why You May Need Esthetic Bonding
Bonding employs a semi-permanent filling for your teeth that will repair chips or breaks, as well as cover exposed roots and cavities. Once bonded, the tooth will instantly look flawless or very close to it, and the bonding material will last for years. That’s one of the reasons bonding is so popular: it’s durable and the effects last for years so you don’t have to go through it all soon.
The procedure is relatively quick, and typically can be completed in a single visit. The procedure involves applying a tooth-colored resin material that is hardened onto the tooth with a special light that acts to bond the material to the tooth. Your dentist will go over every part of the bonding process, show you the light, and explain the details so you feel at ease and comfortable.
You may be a good candidate for bonding if you need to:
- Repair decayed teeth
- Close spaces and gaps
- Repair chipped or cracked teeth
- Improve appearance of yellowed teeth
- Elongate or change the shape of teeth
- Protect the root that has been exposed due to gum recession
