Composite is a mixture of acrylic resin and powdered glass-like particles that produce a tooth-colored filling. This type of material may be self-hardening or may be hardened by exposure to blue light. Composite is used to replace a portion of a broken or chipped tooth, or tooth that has a cavity. There are many advantages to tooth-colored restorations:
- Resin fillings are usually completed in a single visit.
- The resin material is bonded to the teeth creating a tight fit to the natural tooth.
- The fillings are durable, tissue compatible, and kind to the opposing teeth.
- Resin fillings allow us to preserve the greatest amount of natural tooth structure.
- Most importantly, color and shading can be matched to the existing tooth.
Placing Composite Resin Fillings
When you visit Dr. Wadhwa for your dental filling, she will first numb the area by using local anesthesia. She removes the decay using her tools and the surface of the prepared tooth is lightly etched with a gel. A bonding liquid is then applied to the preparation. Once the bonding liquid sets, the filling is placed. Once set, Dr. Wadhwa will trim, smooth, and polish the filling restoration to a natural appearance.
Replacing Silver Fillings with Composite Resin Fillings
Metroplex Implants & Family Dentistry is a mercury-free practice. It is your decision whether or not to replace any old silver fillings, but here are some facts: Amalgam (mercury-silver) fillings can darken over time as they corrode. They can leak and stain on your teeth and gums, therefore many people find it less attractive than tooth-colored restorations. In addition, the placement of amalgam fillings requires removal of some healthy tooth structure. We also now know that by unavoidable design, amalgam fillings ultimately result in a weaker tooth structure if the filling occupies more than 75% of the original tooth structure. In which case, Dr. Wadhwa may recommend a full coverage crown for added strength & longevity.
At your dental appointment, Dr. Wadhwa will recommend the best treatment that will restore your tooth to a natural look & feel while providing strength & protection.
